Designed and crafted to be decorative display items for the kitchen as much as functional objects of daily use, our hand-carved cooking spoons combine the natural beauty of black walnut wood with artisanal craftmanship to create a kitchen tool that is as enjoyable to have on display as it is to use.

Their sculptured silhouette combines an almond-shaped head with a gently curved handle that is designed to sit comfortably in hand. The delicate design of these spoons is unlike that of most regular cooking spoons which tend to be bulky and therefore less precise to use. The almond-shaped head with its slightly pointed tip allows the spoon to reach into the very corner of pots and pans while the fine, curved handle makes them easy to hold and manoeuvre with precision. And while our Black Walnut Cooking Spoons are perfect for stirring porridge, soups, stews and mixing baking ingredients, they can also be used as serving spoons for grains or combined for use as beautiful salad serving spoons.

Each spoon is made from a single piece of carefully selected black walnut and comes pre-finished with a handmade blend of natural mineral oil and organic beeswax which allow the wood to breathe while facilitating the grain’s natural ability to heal itself.

Designed and handmade by Joseph Huebscher in his workshop in Tennessee, our spoons are made in small batches and each spoon comes with a unique story of material and process.

Joseph collects most of the wood for his work from unwanted trees that have fallen or been taken down around his neighbourhood and occasionally uses wood sourced from a local lumber yard or salvaged from old pieces of furniture. His preference is to work with wood that is unusual or not commercially available and he has been collecting carefully selected pieces of wood for years. Joseph first started working with wood alongside his father as a young boy during the long Southern summers in Tennessee. After several tornados came through the town he had grown up in and the winds blew down trees all around him, Joseph and his father decided to acquire a small sawmill and put the wood to work rather than let it go to waste. Though every batch of wood he uses has a unique story, much of the material for his projects comes from wood that would otherwise have simply gone to waste.

The pieces of wood used to create our Black Walnut Cooking Spoons have two sources each with its own distinct story. The Sweetgum Co. workshop was built on land that used to belong to an old Southern farmhouse. Abandoned for years, the garden of the farmhouse was full of black walnut trees. When the farmhouse was eventually taken over by a new owner many of these beautiful trees were cut down. The large black walnut logs were taken away by a mill, but many of the unwanted smaller logs have since been transformed into our spoons and spatulas.

The second source for the wood used to carve the spoons is from Joseph’s childhood home. Around 30 years ago, Joseph’s father cut down a black walnut tree from their garden. This was long before Joseph had started the Sweetgum Co. workshop and while they kept the wood from this tree some of it had warped slightly after drying. While the slightly warped wood is unusable for larger pieces of furniture it is perfect for small cooking spoons and spatulas having had over 30 years to dry.
